Senior Data Cabling Engineer - Full-time, Permanent
(Melksham, Glasgow and South East England)
Pay: £34,500.00-£38,500.00 per year (Potential additional earnings of £7k to £12k)
Job Description:
We are seeking to hire an experienced Senior Data Cabling Engineer who lives within a 60-minute commute of our office in Melksham to join our expanding team at Talkwire.
Ideal candidates should possess a strong understanding and hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of structured cabling systems (both Copper and Fibre) that support data and voice networks, adhering to internationally recognised standards.
This role involves working in various environments to ensure reliable and efficient connectivity for different organisations. Since our customers are located throughout the UK, travel and overnight stays are required.
Skills and Requirements
Installation and Termination:

Install and terminate copper and fibre optic cabling for data and voice networks.

Perform cabling tasks, including pulling, labelling, patching, and testing.

Mount and secure network devices such as switches, patch panels, and routers.
-
Installing various types of conduit and metal containment systems, such as cable trays and baskets.

System Testing and Troubleshooting:

Use diagnostic tools (Fluke) to test and certify network cabling for performance and compliance with standards.

Identify and resolve connectivity issues in structured cabling systems.

Maintenance and Documentation:

Conduct regular maintenance of installed cabling infrastructure to ensure long-term reliability.

Update network documentation, including cable pathways, rack layouts, and labelling systems.

Health and Safety Compliance:

Adhere to safety protocols, especially when working at heights or confined spaces.

Ensure all installations comply with local building codes and industry standards.

Operational Abilities:

Ability to safely drive company vehicles, ensuring secure transportation of valuable equipment.

Capable of performing tasks at heights and in confined spaces in various environments (training will be provided if necessary).

Competent in identifying risks during site surveys and reporting them appropriately.

About the Role
This is a genuinely varied role combining IT support and systems administration with hands-on technology engineering.

You won’t be doing the same thing every day. One day you could be supporting Microsoft 365, configuring laptops and resolving IT issues; the next you could be working on a customer site installing and commissioning CCTV, AV/VC, networking or communication systems.

The role
You will be responsible for supporting the reliable, secure and efficient operation of our IT systems and devices, whilst also supporting the installation, configuration, testing and maintenance of technology systems for our customers.​
Your responsibilities will include:

Providing first and second-line IT support to colleagues.

Diagnosing and resolving hardware, software, account and connectivity issues.
-
Configuring, deploying and maintaining laptops, desktops, mobile devices and other IT equipment.
-
Supporting Microsoft 365, including Teams, SharePoint and Exchange Online.
-
Supporting employee onboarding and offboarding, including user accounts, access and equipment.
-
Maintaining IT asset registers, technical records and documentation.
-
Supporting software deployment, patching, endpoint management, backups and routine system checks.
-
Supporting Cyber Essentials activities and wider IT security improvements.
-
Installing, configuring, testing and commissioning CCTV systems.
-
Installing and supporting emergency telephone, help point and communication systems.

Installing and commissioning AV/VC equipment and associated technology.
-
Supporting network equipment and IP-based technology.
-
Carrying out fault finding, maintenance and remedial works.

Supporting site surveys, installation planning, testing, customer demonstrations and handovers.

Reading technical drawings, schematics and installation plans.

Supporting technology projects, system upgrades, process improvements and automation.

Liaising with customers, suppliers, contractors and colleagues.

Working safely and professionally in line with company procedures, RAMS and site requirements.
About you
We’re looking for someone who is practical, technically minded and enjoys solving problems.
You’ll ideally have experience in some of the following areas:

Windows and Microsoft 365 support.

Networking fundamentals, including IP addressing, DHCP and DNS.

Device deployment and IT asset management.
-
AV/VC and video conferencing systems.
-
CCTV, security, telephony or communications systems.
-
Network-connected technology.
-
Reading technical drawings, schematics or installation plans.

Working in a customer-site or field engineering environment.

Endpoint management or IT security.

You don’t need experience in every area of the role. We’re particularly interested in candidates who have a good technical foundation and are keen to develop their skills across IT systems and hands-on technology engineering.

You should also be:
A confident communicator who is comfortable dealing with customers and colleagues.
